PRODUCT INTRODUCTION

Teravir Tablet is used to treat HIV infection and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in combination with other anti-HIV medicines. It prevents the multiplication of viruses in human cells. This stops the virus from producing new viruses and clears up your infection.

Teravir Tablet is not a cure for HIV/AIDS and only helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body. This helps to lower your risk of getting HIV-related complications and improves your lifespan. It may also be used to prevent HIV infection in some people at high risk. This medicine is best taken with food. It is used in combination with other anti-HIV medicines. Taking these medicines regularly at the right time greatly increases their effectiveness and reduces the chances of HIV becoming resistant to them. It is important not to miss doses and to keep taking them until your doctor tells you it is safe to stop.

Before taking it, tell your doctor if you have any liver or kidney disease or bone problems. While taking it, you may need regular blood tests to check your blood counts, liver function, and kidney function. Since this medicine may cause dizziness or sleepiness, do not drive until you know how it affects you. Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before using this medicine. Do not have unprotected sex or share personal items like razors or toothbrushes, if you are HIV positive. Talk to your doctor about safe ways like condoms to prevent HIV transmission during sex.

WHAT IF YOU FORGET TO TAKE TERAVIR TABLET?

If you miss a dose of Teravir Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Q. Does Teravir Tablet prevent passing of HIV-1 and HBV to others?

In case of HIV-1 infection, Teravir Tablet may reduce the risk of passing the virus to others, but the chances of infecting others still persist. However, in case of HBV infection, Teravir Tablet has not proven to reduce risk of transferring the virus to others. Therefore, the patients of both HIV-1 infection and HBV infection should practice safe sex and should not share dirty needles.

Teravir Tablet is safe if used in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Take it exactly as directed and do not skip any dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and let your doctor know if any of the side effects bother you.

Q. How should I take Teravir Tablet?

You should take Teravir Tablet in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Teravir Tablet works best when taken with meals or just afterwards. However, taking it without food does not reduce its effectiveness. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor.

Q. For how long do I need to take Teravir Tablet for HBV infection?

Duration of treatment will depend on the severity of HBV infection. You will need to take periodic blood tests to keep a check on the viral load and number of T cells. Your doctor will then decide the duration of the medicine accordingly. In some cases, treatment is required life long.

Q. I vomited after taking Teravir Tablet. What should I do?

Take another tablet of Teravir Tablet if you vomit within 1 hour of taking it. If you vomit after more than an hour of taking Teravir Tablet, then you need not take another tablet. Consult your doctor if you have vomiting every time you take Teravir Tablet or if the vomiting persists for a longer duration.

Q. What should I do if I forget to take Teravir Tablet?

If you forget to take Teravir Tablet within 12 hours of the time you usually take it, you should take Teravir Tablet with food as soon as possible and resume the normal dosing schedule. If you miss a dose of Teravir Tablet by more than 12 hours and it is almost time for the next dose, you should not take the missed dose and simply resume the usual dosing schedule.
