What is Loperamide Hydrochloride and when is it used?

Loperamide Hydrochloride Diarrhoea Capsules make the stools in your bowels firmer, which helps regulate bowel movements back to a normal routine. It treats diarrhoea by slowing down muscle movement and thus increasing the absorption of fluids in the intestinal tract. The active ingredient in these capsules is Loperamide Hydrochloride at a strength of 2mg.

Can I buy Loperamide over the counter?

Some pack sizes and doses of Loperamide are available to purchase over the counter in the UK. You don’t need a prescription, but a pharmacist will need to ensure the treatment is suitable and safe for you.

What causes Diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea has a number of different causes. Some of the most common include:

  • Infections caused by a virus, bacteria or parasites
  • Food allergies
  • Alcohol
  • Appendicitis

Diarrhoea may also be a side effect of medications. If you’re taking other medications please check the side effects. Furthermore, chronic diarrhoea could be a symptom of a more serious condition, which should be investigated by your GP.

What is the recommended dosage of this treatment?

Loperamide capsules are to be swallowed whole, with water if necessary.

The dose for adults and children aged 12 years and over is two capsules, followed by one extra capsule after each loose bowel movement. Do not take more than six capsules in any 24 hour period.

When taking this medication, it’s recommended to take on more fluids than usual.

When should Loperamide not be used?

Loperamide is not suitable for:

  • Children under the age of 12
  • Anyone allergic to loperamide or any of the other ingredients in the product
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Do not take Loperamide if you:

  • Are having a flare up of an inflammatory bowel condition, such as ulcerative colitis
  • Have diarrhoea as a result of taking antibiotics
  • Are constipated
  • Have blood in your stool or a high temperature

How should I store Loperamide?

Loperamide should be stored in a dry, cool environment that does not exceed 25°C.
