What is Levonorgestrel?

Levonorgestrel is an emergency contraception pill or ‘morning after pill’ and is taken after unprotected sex to prevent unplanned pregnancy. Levonorgestrel is a hormonal birth control medication for women, whereby the hormone Levonorgestrel prevents the release of the egg from the ovary to prevent fertilisation by sperm (male reproductive cells). Levonorgestrel should be taken within 72 hours following unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy; Levonorgestrel is more effective at preventing pregancy when taken sooner.

How does Levonorgestrel work to prevent unplanned pregnancy?

Levonorgestrel works by preventing or delaying the release of the egg from the ovary, therefore, it cannot be fertilised by the sperm. Levonorgestrel mimics the natural hormone progesterone, which is produced in the ovaries. It is important to take Levonorgestrel as soon as possible to maximise its effectiveness. However, Levonorgestrel is effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days). The Levonorgestrel pill does not interfere with other regular methods of contraception.

How effective is Levonorgestrel at preventing unplanned pregnancy?

It is important to take Levonorgestrel as soon as possible as it’s effectiveness decreases with time.

When taken within the first 24 hours95% effective
When taken within 24 – 48 hours85% effective
When taken within 48 – 72 hours58% effective

After 72 hours has passed since unprotected sex, Levonorgestrel may not work at all. It is important to note that you do not need to wait until the morning after to take Levonorgestrel as the ‘morning after pill’ phrase may suggest.

How do I take Levonorgestrel?

One Levonorgestrel pill should be taken as soon as possible with water.

Levonorgestrel should be taken as soon as possible following unprotected sex to maximise its effectivness.

After 72 hours have passed, the efficacy of Levonorgestrel is unknown and the pill may be entirely ineffective. Following 72 hours, you should consult your GP for additional contraceptive advice. If you have unprotected sex after taking Levonorgestrel, it will not prevent pregnancy.

If you vomit or have diarrhoea within 2 hours of taking the Levonorgestrel pill it may not have been absorbed properly by the gut which can compromise its efficacy. Therefore, you should seek professional advice from an expert and obtain additional emergency contraception.

What is the difference between Levonelle and Levonorgestrel?

The main difference between Levonelle and Levonorgestrel is that Levonelle is branded and as a result more expensive. The branded (Levonelle) and generic version (Levonorgestrel) are both medically equivalent; they have the same active ingredient and work in exactly the same way.
