What is Curanail / Loceryl?

Curanail (also known as Loceryl) is an antifungal nail lacquer used specifically to treat fungal infections in nails. It contains the active ingredient amorolfine hydrochloride which disrupts the growth of a large variety of fungi, combatting the infection. The 3ml size is branded as Curanail, whilst the 5ml size is branded as Loceryl, but they are both the same 5% Amorolfine formula produced by dermatology specialists Galderma.

How should I use it?

The affected nail should be filed down as much as possible and cleaned with a swab to remove any grease. Dip the applicator into the bottle of Curanail or Loceryl nail lacquer, making sure not to wipe the lacquer off on the edge of the bottle before use. Apply the gel evenly on the entire affected nail with the provided applicator, once per week. Allow the gel to dry for approximately 3 minutes before cleaning the applicator with the swab used before to clean the nails.

Be careful to not use the same nail file for both your infected and healthy nails, and avoid using artificial nails and nail varnish during the treatment. When repeating the application process, remove the old lacquer and any nail varnish, and file the nail again if needed.

How long does it take to work?

Continue to use the treatment until the infection has cleared and healthy nails have grown back. Treated each week without any breaks, the infection should clear after 6 months for fingernails and 9 to 12 months for toenails. After every three months of treatment, continue the treatment if the infection is improving, and talk to your doctor if the infection is the same or has worsened.

What is a fungal nail infection?

Fungal nail infections occur when the conditions are right for naturally-occurring fungi to overpopulate, typically in warm and moist environments. This may occur when the feet are hot and sweaty in shoes, if you walk barefoot in commonly infected areas such as locker rooms or communal showers, or if you have a weakened immune system. The result of nail infections can include nail discolouration, thickening or distortion of the nail, pain on the nail when pressure is applied, and fragile or brittle nails.
